To address the question from the earlier post....

When Jake goes in to pray I see it as just another attempt to regain some feeling. I would think that most everyone atleast when they were younger was brought up with some sort of religion, Jake seems to be Catholic, so the idea of religion doesn't seem new or strange. Yet most of the characters in this book seem to be searching for some sort of feeling or trying to grasp at the idea that they have none. You can see this is Jake, Brett, and Robert. Perhaps going into church was another attempt at trying to create some sort of feeling of anything, whether it is love, happiness, caring, etc. But it doesn't work. Look at their drinking habits, which is one subject room for plenty of discussion questions. They are completely drunk, or looking to get that way, all day long. In many ways it is just another soul searching tactic, to either try and find happiness within themselves, or cover up the fact that they don't have any.

Anyways...there is my go at that one...

What do you think so far about the dynamic between Brett and Jake? Do you think they could ever work out? Do you think they are doomed just to destroy each other...or atleast Brett destroy Jake. What about Brett's many many men? Did you catch the sly quote from Mike on page 89, "We have got the loveliest hotel," Mike said, "I think it is a brothel"....."I believe it's a brothel" "I should know."

By the way Brett Ashley is probably my most favorite literary character, I just think she has quite an interesting dyanamic...

    Haha/Announcements
I finally figured out how to use this thing...amazing what reading Sarah's directions will do. Anyway, I've posted some definitions for everyone on the announcement board for thefacebook.com and I also posted some questions there. I'll list important stuff from the announcement board below:
Read chapters 1-10 by Thursday night, let me know if the reading load is too much or too little...I don't know what your classload/lifeload is right now, so feedback is great.

    VOCABULARY:
POULES (p.22) - hens, which is probably a way of saying girls, chicks, let your imagination roam.
FIACRE (p.23) - hackney carriage (I didn't know what that was, so kudos if you did, but it means "a carriage for hire.")
CORDON THE CONCIERGE (not French, but oh well, p.42) - the concierge set to guard the area
NOUVELLE REVUE FRANCAISE (p.44) - New French Review
    SOMMELIER (p.45) - wine waiter
    TROMPER (p. 62) - to mislead
    ABYSSINIA (p.67) - Ethiopia
BATEAU MOUCHE (p.83) - ugly boat (literally "boat fly")
PELOTA (p.97) - a Basque or Spanish game played in a court with a ball and a wickerwork racket.
KEPIS (p.98) - A French military cap with a flat circular top and a visor.

I should also note the edition of book that I have, as my page numbers probably aren't very good for the rest of you, but can potentially give you a general area to look. I have the First Scribner trade paperback edition 2003. All of the page citations I will use will be from this edition. Hope that clears up some/any/all confusion.

ALSO, please look at these lines: the last line of Chapter 4, "It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing." In Chapter 10 (p.102-103), Jake says that he goes into the cathedral and prays, but when he leaves he says, "I only wish I felt religious and maybe I would the next time" Why do you think he would pray if he didn't feel reglious? Please discuss.

    hint
I don't know how many of you have read this book before, but for those who haven't and are stumped by Jake's "injury"....his manhood no longer works...Whether he is just impotent or has lost part of his package is unclear to me because I have read on other sources both options...

hope that clears some of the fog about his war injuries...

    And the club begins...
    Hi everyone!

My name is Sarah Krieg and I am part of the book club that was started on facebook. I thought that a livejournal would be an easy way to post questions or comments about what we are reading. This also gives us all a chance to respond and be as interactive as a club can be without meeting each other. If anyone already has a livejournal...then you probably know the ropes, but if not, here are a few pointers to help get you going... Our link is www.livejournal.com/users/UWBookClub and this is where you can just view the journal. To log on, go to www.livejournal.com and our username is uwbookclub and our password is uwashbc. Once you are logged in, find where it says Journal and put your mouse over it and then to post a new entry just hit Update. Feel free to look around or post an entry with a little bit of your information and that sort of thing. Also, don't be a afraid to recruit more people!

    Current Mood: excited
