Haha/Announcements
I finally figured out how to use this thing...amazing what reading Sarah's directions will do. Anyway, I've posted some definitions for everyone on the announcement board for thefacebook.com and I also posted some questions there. I'll list important stuff from the announcement board below:
Read chapters 1-10 by Thursday night, let me know if the reading load is too much or too little...I don't know what your classload/lifeload is right now, so feedback is great.
VOCABULARY:
POULES (p.22) - hens, which is probably a way of saying girls, chicks, let your imagination roam.
FIACRE (p.23) - hackney carriage (I didn't know what that was, so kudos if you did, but it means "a carriage for hire.")
CORDON THE CONCIERGE (not French, but oh well, p.42) - the concierge set to guard the area
NOUVELLE REVUE FRANCAISE (p.44) - New French Review
SOMMELIER (p.45) - wine waiter
TROMPER (p. 62) - to mislead
ABYSSINIA (p.67) - Ethiopia
BATEAU MOUCHE (p.83) - ugly boat (literally "boat fly")
PELOTA (p.97) - a Basque or Spanish game played in a court with a ball and a wickerwork racket.
KEPIS (p.98) - A French military cap with a flat circular top and a visor.
I should also note the edition of book that I have, as my page numbers probably aren't very good for the rest of you, but can potentially give you a general area to look. I have the First Scribner trade paperback edition 2003. All of the page citations I will use will be from this edition. Hope that clears up some/any/all confusion.
ALSO, please look at these lines: the last line of Chapter 4, "It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing." In Chapter 10 (p.102-103), Jake says that he goes into the cathedral and prays, but when he leaves he says, "I only wish I felt religious and maybe I would the next time" Why do you think he would pray if he didn't feel reglious? Please discuss.
